Tens of Thousands of Pro-Lifers

Yesterday was the 30th anniversary of the Roe vs Wade ruling. For any of you who have been living under a rock for the last three decades, abortion is one of the hot topics in US politics and society in general. Cities are divided and I know more than one friendship that couldn't stand the stress ofdifferences on this pivotal issue. If you want to divide a room, just mention that you're prolife/choice.

It was a normal Tuesday afternoon and I looked out of my office window to see tens of thousands of people (literally!!) marching down the mall protesting. This is DC! I have never seen so many people in one place at one time. There were people jam packed and filling a four lane street and they kept on coming for about 15-20 minutes. It was big enough to make it onto the BBC world news at 6.

They were holding signs for Church of the Holy Virgin, Sacred Heart School and just about every other religiously-affiliated institution within 100 miles of DC. They were giving out brochures with pictures of cute little babies on them. I wouldn't know what they said.

Of course, they had tons and tons of police. Police on bikes, police on foot, police in cars. Luckily, they were a peaceful bunch (they were protesting for life, after all). I don't agree with their opinion at all, to put it lightly. However, I wholheartedly agree that they should be able to show their opinion and campaign for their rights. It's not too far away in Kenya where protesters are doused in tear gas, and muc, much worse. Given the importance of security in DC, it's quite a feat.
